Biographical note

The Oliver Bird Trust was established with £30,000 donated by Captain Oliver Bird in 1957 (in addition to £20,000 (+) donated earlier). Its purpose was to fund research into human fertility and trust money was used to set up the Council for Investigation of Fertility Control (CIFC), and fund its research on oral contraceptives. It also funded an annual lecture and prize. The trust was wound up in April 1970, but money was vested in the Margaret Pyke Memorial trustees to continue the Oliver Bird lectures. The first of the new series of lectures was given in 1972. [(+) The cheque for this sum is framed and held at FPA national office.].
