Biographical note

The School was opened c.1954 when it was approved for the training of students of physiotherapy. It received further approval in 1956 when its students were permitted to sit the Intermediate and Final Examinations of the Society. The first approved course in Remedial Gymnastics ran at the School in 1957 and consisted of future Army Physical Training Corps instructors observing and training in theory and practice over the course of several years in subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Body Mechanics and Exercise and Recreational Therapy. On becoming Army Remedial Gymnasts, candidates could subsequently sit examinations to become members of the Society of Remedial Gymnasts, as members of which they were added to the CSP's list of trained Remedial Gymnasts and could qualify as chartered physiotherapists after reduced periods of study.

In the 1970s, c.1976, a Joint Services School opened at the RAF School at Halton, which incorporated the Royal Navy School, previously at Haslar (see SA/CSP/C.2/9/24/1), and the Army School, previously at Woolwich.
