About this work

Description

This was a project undertaken by Michael Foster on behalf of the Tavistock Institute to investigate the role and function of the pet, particularly the cat, within the family, and the social and psychological forces underlying the keeping of pets. The research was conducted through group discussions and individual interview of cat owners and drew upon earlier work by the Tavistock Institute on the role of the pet and pet food advertising (see SA/TIH/B/25). Includes project correspondence, copies of articles including Harold Bridger's 'The changing role of pets in society', and copy of document SFP 1012 'Companionship With Humans'.
