Biographical note
The Radiological Protection Service (RPS) was formed in 1953 by the MRC and the Ministry of Health. The Service was established to consider a number of general aspects of radiological protection and to coordinate the work of MRC's Protection Committee and Advisory Committee. It considered radiation protection problems, research projects and radiation tests of concern to Government departments, public authorities and other organisations. RPS carried out research concerning the protection of workers and the general public from the health effects of ionizing radiations, as well as acting as a central organisation for controlling radiation hazards. The group was directed by W Binks, and the deputy director was E E Smith. MRC's Protection Committee and Advisory Committee were both set up in accordance with the provisions of the Radioactive Substances Act, 1948.
