Listen to this talk with Wellcome Collecton curators Shamita Sharmacharja and Emily Sargent as they discuss upcoming installations by artists Kerry Tribe and Sop. You will be able to see these artworks when we reopen our museum and library.       

After an introduction by Melanie Keen, Director of Wellcome Collection, you’ll hear pre-recorded discussions with Shamita and Emily in the gallery, filmed during the installation of the artworks. Shamita discusses how Kerry Tribe’s ‘Standardized Patient’ highlights the need for empathy between patients and doctors in a clinical setting. Emily will explore Sop’s ‘The Den 1’, uncovering their experience as a shielder during the Covid-19 pandemic, and how they sought respite in nature. Their discussions will explore connections between both artists’ works. 

At the end of the event there is a discussion between Melanie, Shamita and Emily.  The event is live captioned by Stagetext.

Melanie Keen is Director of Wellcome Collection. She was previously Director and Chief Curator at Iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts), where she was instrumental in the revitalisation of Iniva’s mission and vision. Melanie is an independent advisor to the Government Art Collection, sits on the British Council’s Visual Arts Advisory Group, and was on the selection committee for the British Pavilion, Venice Biennale 2019. She was one of the judges for Art Fund Museum of the Year 2020 and has recently been appointed to the Board of Visitors of Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford.

Curators Introduce Art by Kerry Tribe and Sop

Watch a recording of this talk and live experiment in which author and historian Jessica Borge recreates some of the 1960s consumer tests of condoms. Watch her fill an original 1967 Durex Gossamer condom first with air, then with water, from her kitchen.  

Jessica also takes you through the history of the London Rubber Company, the original maker of Durex condoms. A pre-recorded interview with John Harvey, a former sales manager at the London Rubber Company, is included, telling you more about the Durex Gossamer condom.

Dr Jessica Borge is an interdisciplinary researcher in the field of 20th-century British history, specialising in the intersection of business, society and media. Her book ‘Protective Practices: A History of the London Rubber Company and the Condom Business’ is the first full-length study on the London Rubber Company.

Condoms in the Kitchen

Watch a recording of a conversation between artist/writer Cheryl Martin and writer Rianna Walcott reflecting on their own experiences of mental health and care practices during and emerging from this global health crisis.  

This online discussion considers what taking care means for Black women, who are simultaneously dealing with the consequences of the Black Lives Matter movement, social distancing and lockdown. How do we develop new care practices to help us embrace radical change? 

‘Supporting Ourselves in Changing Times’ was also part of Bloomsbury Festival (16–25 October 2020).

This conversation may mention suicide, self-harm, and childhood sexual/emotional abuse. 

Cheryl Martin examines experiences most people are afraid to talk about with a humour, warmth and raw honesty that draws audiences in. Her shows tour to studios, as well as non-theatre spaces such as libraries, hospitals, living rooms and prisons. She has won an Edinburgh Fringe First, as co-director/producer of ‘The World Is Too Much’ (Traverse Theatre), and two Manchester Evening News Awards, one for writing and one for directing.

Natasha shares her own experience of chronic illness with others, while Daze advocates for climate justice, but they have been reflecting on similar questions: where does self-care end and community care begin? And how do you find a balance between the two?

Daze Aghaji is a 20-year-old climate justice activist and student. She studies history and politics at Goldsmiths, University of London. In 2019 she ran for election in the EU Parliamentary elections (being the youngest candidate to do so) and she has strong ties with Extinction Rebellion. The main areas of Daze’s activism are regenerative cultures, intersectionality, environment, youth political engagement and social-change funding. Daze has recently become a trustee at Blagrave Trust.

Join us for this discussion on young people’s approaches to mental health, wellbeing and self-care in the time of Covid-19. Facilitators Alain ‘Fusion’ Clapham and Grace Gatera will host a live discussion based on videos of youth mental health research and linked creative projects, which will be shown during the event. On the panel will also be five RawMinds ambassadors, to provide the perspective of young people.

This event will discuss the work of Wellcome's mental health priority area, which seeks to transform how we understand, fund, prevent and treat anxiety and depression in young people. You will also find out more about the Covid Living project from creative producer Tim Partridge, poet Koleka Putuma and illustrator Ivyy Chen, which explored how young people were coping with lockdown in April to June 2020. At the end of the event there will be an opportunity for questions and discussion.

Young People, Mental Health and Recipes for Self-care

Join poet, writer and researcher Jamie Hale and four fellow disabled artists for this online conversation. 

They will reflect on their different experiences and practices, and ask what it means to be a D/deaf or disabled artist in a pandemic. 

The artists will talk for 45 minutes, and then there will be 15 minutes of questions and answers. 

You will be able to watch this event on Wellcome Collection’s YouTube channel, and submit questions in advance or during the event using Slido. Your microphone and camera will not be on. After booking a ticket you will receive an email with joining instructions. 

Live captions will be provided by Stagetext, and BSL interpretation will be delivered by Michelle Wood. 

A series of articles by Jamie Hale exploring ‘Art, activism and access’, and featuring some of the artists taking part in this event, is also available to read and listen to. 

Jamie is an artist, curator, and founder of disability arts showcase CRIPtic. They create poetry, comedy, scriptwriting and drama for page, stage and screen. They have written for publications including the Guardian and Magma, and have performed at venues including the Barbican and Southbank Centre. Their pandemic poetry pamphlet, ‘Shield’, is published in January 2021.

Amelia Cavallo is a blind theatre practitioner, academic and workshop facilitator who works as a multi-disciplinary performer, musical director, lecturer and consultant on access and audio description. They are a PhD candidate studying intersections of gender, disability and sexuality. Amelia co-founded Quiplash, a theatre company making space for Disabled people across the LGBTQIA+ spectrum.

Miss Jacqui is a poet and songwriter who performed at the 2012 Paralympic Opening Ceremony, and at venues including the Southbank Centre. She knows a lot about working with the cards that you are dealt, and always tries to challenge societal perceptions, like what it means to be a Black woman with a disability.

Born in Essex in 1959, Keith Salmon studied Fine Art at Shrewsbury and Falmouth Schools of Art in the early 1980s. Registered as blind in 1999, he now works from his studio in Irvine, Scotland and exhibits his semi-abstract landscape paintings throughout the UK.

Signkid is the UK’s first and only Deaf music producer, writer and performer, pioneering a unique aesthetic that integrates British Sign Language signing into a visual language for live hip-hop, rap and urban music. SignKid has performed at festivals including Deaf Rave, Wireless and Latitude, and has had extensive BBC coverage.
