What brought you to our website today?

The film made for mothers-to-be discusses the value of even a short period of breast feeding, particularly with regards to the protection it can provide, the balanced nature of the ingredients of breast milk and its importance in ensuring healthy growth and development. There are some vox pops at the beginning with mothers explaining why they didn't breast feed. Nurses and mid-wives help new mothers to feed their babies. A link is made between over feeding and obesity in adults. Dr Valman is sympathetic to mothers who can't or decide not to breast feed; he does explain, however, the importance of bonding, how natural breast feeding is and plays down the perceived 'inconvenience'. There is a short intertitle with SMA (a supplier of formula milk) at the end.

This documentary looks at the strange world of re-borns - dolls made to look exactly like newborn babies. We meet Jaime who makes these babies, customising them to exactly how the purchaser wishes. And we meet two women going through the process of purchasing new babies. Christine is trying to replace the grandson she lost when he emigrated with his mother to New Zealand, while Sue already has a number of babies and travels to America to buy a baby with open eyes and a smile. The womens' husbands are a combination of bemused and troubled by their partners' desire to have such life-like dolls and the programme leaves one with very mixed emotions about the complexities of maternal psychology.

My fake baby.

Many women expect to become mothers but are childless through social rather than biological reasons - perhaps they haven't met the right person or they prioritised career or education earlier in life. Featuring international interviews by grief counsellor and researcher Lois Tonkin, this collection of first-person stories provides insight into the under-discussed situation of being childless by circumstance. Each story highlights the different aspects of being childless by circumstance, as women move through their 30s, 40s, and 50s, and beyond their ages of fertility. The book explores feelings of grief and loss, and also how women adapt positively to their changed life expectations, finding excitement in the alternative, rich and complex shapes their lives have taken.

This film shows various cases of mothers who have difficulty breast feeding their babies. Solutions to the problems are demonstrated, for instance a case of inverted nipples can be treated successfully with massage and the use of a breast pump. An inadequate milk supply can be supplemented with formula. 'Flabby breasts' can be successfully treated with massage, supplementary feeding and exercise.

Impact of birthing practices on breastfeeding : protecting the mother and baby continuum / Mary Kroeger ; with Linda J. Smith.

A film originally in two parts made for mothers-to-be, looking at the correct way to bathe a baby. This first part shows, among other things, the importance of avoiding draughts, which equipment is needed, how to change a soiled nappy, the correct temperature of bath water and how to wash the face and head. In 2013, in partnership with the BFI, Wellcome Library commissioned a new sound track by Dr Felicity Ford. Ford develop a soundtrack which would convey some of the rich social history of the film and be sympathetic to its original reception in civic spaces. She created field recordings of buildings with acoustics similar to the site where the original film was shot, and the materials employed for bathing and dressing a baby over seventy years ago - enamel basins, castille soap and jugs of water - were all used to evoke the texture of post-natal care. Mothers and their tiny babies were enlisted to record the distinctive sounds produced by a very young infant, so that the little baby featured now has a ' voice'.
