Lennep claims that this image is related to a text by the ancient alchemist Zosimos of Panoplis, who writes: "These old sages voluntarily dismembered themselves and boiled the pieces until a perfect decoction took place, in order to change their feeble old age into a state of force and vigour". The image here also has Christian resonances of baptism and resurrection. In alchemy the dove represented the volatile spirit of putrefying matter (Lennep, p. 122)

Susanna is kneeling near the basin of a fountain. The two elders approach from behind and blackmail her for sex. She looks away from them, representting the verses: "Then Susanna sighed, and said, I am straitened on every side: for if I do this thing, it is death unto me: and if I do it not I cannot escape your hands. It is better for me to fall into your hands, and not do it, than to sin in the sight of the Lord." (Apocrypha, Susanna, vv. 22-23). In the foreground are utensils for bathing (ewer and sponge). In the background is the palace in Babylon of her wealthy husband Joachim
