About this work

Description

No previous titles on slides, so descriptions are approximate. At least one of the slides was later adapted for use by Burroughs Wellcome & Co for promotional purposes.

Identifiable slides include some pertaining to: British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913 (led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott); Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 1914-1917 (led by Sir Ernest Shackleton) and King George V and Queen Mary visiting India to attend the 1911 Dehli Durbar.

Image showing Mr H. G. Ponting, F.R.G.S. official photographer to the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910, developing a plate with 'Tabloid' 'Rytol' in his dark-room in the hut at the winter quarters, Cape Evans, was later used in advertisement for Burroughs Wellcome's 'Tabloid' 'Rytol'.

Biographical note

Glass lantern slides, originally stored in a wooden box. Slides were numbered but as the numbers were duplicated it suggests these slides were amalgamated at an earlier date.

Original box contained the following inlay:

"Please pack these slides very carefully, and see that they are tight in each compartment, to prevent movement, and consequent breakage during transit. Kindly return to Burroughs Wellcome & Co, 1105 Sherbrooke St W, Montreal".
