    PREFACE. The following Essay contains some researches into the Phy¬ siology and Organic Relations of the Blood in a healthy state, undertaken by the author with a view to the subsequent ex¬ amination of that fluid in its morbid conditions. The time and opportunities requisite for the pursuit of this latter de¬ partment of the subject seem to place it beyond the reach of the student, and assign it to the interval (often sufficiently long) between the termination of academic studies, and the full exercise of the privileges thereby acquired. The field is as promising as it is imperfectly examined : for although we are seldom able to deduce practical rules di¬ rectly from ultimate facts, the knowledge of such facts is va¬ luable, in enabling us to decide between the claims of con¬ tending systems of practical medicine.
