About this work

Description

John Bishop King's personal papers, and diaries: MS. 7157 contains 2 items which reflect King's interest in phrenology and graphology, whilst diaries by him and his wife are held as MSS.7630-7632.

Their diaries combine to cover, with one short break, a period from King's leaving England to their marriage and on for two years until their departure, presumably temporary, to the Andaman Islands. J.B. King's diary, MS.7630, primarily records details of his patients, the personal entries chiefly relate to voyages undertaken. Joanna King's diary, MS.7631, records household and social events in some detail. MS.7632 comprises loose papers previously kept in MSS.7630-7631, mainly newspaper advertisements.

Biographical note

John Bishop King (1832-1900) was the son of William King M.D. (Cantab.) F.R.C.P. (1786-1865), who practiced in Brighton. J.B. King passed as M.D. in 1855 and travelled East in the same year; after a short period in India he settled at Penang. The Medical Directory lists him as resident there until 1898; although he is also recorded in the 1881 census as 'Surgeon Not practs.', residing in Brighton, Sussex with his spouse Joanna.

His first wife Joanna (née Smith, 1849-1884) was the daughter of Captain Smith of Penang; they were married in Penang in 1866. John Bishop King remarried in 1886, and had three children by Annie L King (nee Graff, b. 1860).

In the 1891 census, John King is listed as a Retired Surgeon Major in Brighton, remaining there until his death.
