    4 Assuming the proportion of males to females to be the same as in 1896, there are 59,180 males and 66,095 females. AREA OF THE DISTRICT AND DENSITY OF THE POPULATION. The area of Fulham is 1,701 acres, and there are 73.6 persons to the acre compared with 60.3 persons to the acre in the County of London. The marriage rate, i.e., persons married per 1,000 inhabitants, was 17.5, the rate for the County of London being 18.6, and that for England and Wales 16.2. BIRTHS AND BIRTH RATE. The births registered during the year numbered 4,307, 2,191 males, and 2,116 females. There was one birth to every 29 in habitants, and 100 births of males to 96.6 of females. These births correspond to a birth-rate of 34.4, showing a slight recovery on that of 1897, which was 34.2, but being with that exception the lowest yet recorded in Fulham. The rate for the County of London was 29.5, being the lowest yet recorded, and those of the adjoining parishes were Kensington
