Sederunt and Minute Books of Board of Trustees and Directors and Board of Direction

The minutes relate to monthly and Annual General Meetings and contain details of all aspects of the Board's management and administration of both the Crichton Royal Institution and from 1849 Southern Counties Asylum. They include lists of patients admitted and discharged, until 1899; the Treasurer's monthly and then quarterly, from November 1849, reports of all monies paid and received detailing patient accounts from 1840 to 1866; the House Steward's quarterly accounts, which include staff salaries and wages from 1842 to 1866; the visiting Directors inspection reports; and notices of senior staff changes. From February 1850 separate lists of accounts, patient boards, and staff salaries and wages for Crichton Royal Institution and Southern Counties Asylum are recorded in the quarterly reports of the Treasurer and House Steward. Also included are some minutes of standing and temporary Committees appointed at the Annual General Meetings, such as the Buildings, Tenders, Farm and Gardens Committees. The minutes of the meetings of these Committees for 1898-1912 can be found in DGH1/2/1/3. From 1912 onwards the minutes of the Committees are included within the minutes of the monthly meetings of the Board. Minutes of Annual General Meetings include a full Treasurer's income and expenditure report. Abstracts of Accounts are included for years 1912 to 1924, then again from 1936 to 1943. Reports by the Commissioners of the General Board of Control for Scotland are included from 1912 to 1933. Additional reports, memoranda and legislation are included in many of the volumes. Volumes are indexed from August 1864 to 1948.

The Trustees and Directors of Crichton Royal Institution were incorporated after the passing of the 1840 Crichton Act, which conferred their powers. The first meeting of the Trustees and Directors of Crichton Royal Institution took place on 26 November 1840. From January 1841 the Board held monthly meetings and Annual General Meetings. A second Crichton Act was passed in 1897 which altered the composition and process of selection of the Board of Directors.
