Reference to medicines for the body but also for the mind, and of his own impending death. Refers to the excesses of eating and drinking while in each other's company and how his nerves are painful. Urges the recipient of the letter to resist intemperance due to his youth and to learn from the sender's mistakes. It is possible that he is referring to gout.
