We, Dr. Gustav Gaertner, of Schulerstrasse 1, Vienna, in the Empire of Austria, Physician, and Heinrich Witzenmanx, of Pforgheim, in tin1 Empire of Germany, Manufacturer, do hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be performed to be particularly described and ascertained 5 in and bv the following statement: This invention relates to an apparatus or appliance for the hygienic treatment of sick jiersons, by cooling the head, heart, abdomen or other parts of the human body, such apparatus or appliance being composed of a flexible pipe, usually wound round or adapted to fit the portion of the body to be cooled, thus forming 10 a hollow, or Hat, or other shaped appliance through which a suitable medium for cooling is conducted. In the manufacture of our cooling apparatus we employ the well known flexible metallic hose or tubing, formed of helically wound metal which allows of being extended in its longitudinal direction, and by the employment of flexible metal 15 tube, a good transmission of the cold temperature to the respective part of the body to which the apparatus is applied is effected, the metal being the best con¬ ducting material while at the same time, a proper and good fitting of the appliance to the portion of the body is maintained, which was hitherto only rendered possible by making cooling apparatus of india rubber. 20 Another advantage of the application of these flexible metallic pipes, is found in their increased resistance which does not allow the sectional space through which the cooling medium is to pass, to become contracted. The improved cooling apparatus is represented on the accompanying drawings of which Fig. 1 shews an application of the apparatus to the head of a person to 25 be treated. Figs. 2, 8 and 4 shew example's of various forms or shapes to which the tubing may be made to conform to adapt it to the different parts of the body to be cooled and Fig. 5 represents on a larger scale a short piece of the metallic flexible pipe which is made use of for the construction of the improved cooling apparatus. 30 The apparatus or appliance is to be closely applied to the respective part of the body to be cooled, which application is rendered easy owing to the flexibility of the pipe. A suitable medium for cooling purposes is then conducted or forced through the apparatus.
