    COMMUNICATED TO THE mli Sdlfottr WEEKLY BETYBE*. Vol. VII. 1 WEEK ENDING SATURDAY, JANUARY 5, 1867. No. 336. DISEASES.—The extent to which they prevailed in Pauper, Charitable, and Public Institutions oj Manchester and Salford. The disease returns are less satisfactory than they have been of late. In the week terminating on Saturday, the 5th instant, 1,439 new cases of disease and injuries occasioned by accidents were observer] in the public practice of Manchester and Salford. In the two prece ling weeks the respective numbers were 1373 and 1*281. The proportion of deaths t> cases, 1 in 14, proved unusually high, higher than in any preceding week since the returns were first printed in August, i860. This proves demonstratively with what fearful severity the severe frost of the early day3 of January told upon the poor; we are the m >re certain that it really did so from the fact that the total number of deaths (267)reg istered during the week was not excessive. As a general rule the deaths which occur am mg those of the p >or, who are attended gratuitously in public practice do not average more than about 1 5th of the total number registered in the town ; last week, however, the deaths among patients of this class rose to nearly 2-5tbs. It may be hoped that the attention of the authorities of our hospitals and workhouses may be directed to this exces¬ sive mortal tv among the poor, and that every care may be taken that wards and waiting rooms at the->e institutions are thoroughly warmed. The Fever return though somewhat more satisfactory than last week is still high, no fewer than 97 new cases being recorded. As might he expected likewise we oberve this week a material increase in the number of new cases of Bronchitis and kindred Affections of the Chest. In the two preceding weeks 236 and 246 new cases were respectivelv returned, last week the number rose to 317. No other disease prevailed to any unusual extent. DEATHS. —The Number Registered in Manchester and Salford, and their Causes. In the week ending on Saturday, January 5th, 267 deaths were registered in the eleven districts of the Sanitary Association: in the two preceding weeks the numbers were 274 and 250; and in the corresponding week of last year 300. Eighty-nine deaths are attributed to Diseases of the Lungs, 15 to Scarlatina, and 14 to Fever. In London, according to the last return of the Registrar General, the deaths fell short of the estimated average by 178. At the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, the mean temperature of the air in the week was 25*2°; at the Royal Infirmary, it was 30*8 ’'; at Old Trafford, 27 4°; and at Eccles, 27*3. The lowest night temperature at Greenwich was 6-6°, but at the Infirmary the thermometer never fell below 22-3°. At Penketh, one of our outlying stations, it was aa low as 10*4®. JOHN ED.
