Biographical note
From 1920 six Local Boards were founded, whose membership was nominated locally, to represent members to Council. Branches could be set up in towns of 5000 inhabitants, with a minimum membership of 30, and these could found sub-branches in smaller towns if the need arose.
In 1948 the CSP added nine more local boards to the existing six to mirror the new NHS boards. Each Board was composed of representatives of local branches, specific interest groups and co-optees. They liaised with NHS boards, found employment for members and held congresses and courses. The boundaries and names of the boards have been revised periodically.
