    N° 0888 A.I). 1899 Date of Application, 30th Mar., 1899—Accepted, 20th May, 1899 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION. A New or Improved Guard for use in connection with Poison Bottles and the like. I, Maurice Fariiall, of 18, Market Place, Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, Gentleman, do hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner tilie same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement : 5 This invention relates to a new or improved guard for use in connection with poison bottles and the. like, the object being to provide a simple device capable of being readily applied to bottles of various kinds that- are designed to contain poison, the arrangement) of the guard upon such bottles being intended to draw attention to the nature of their contents, and it further prevents the cork or stopper 19 being removed until the said guard has been operated in a certain manner, while after the bottle lias been used, the guard automatically replaces itself' in the required position. In order that this invention may be fully understood, I will now proceed to describe same with reference to tilie accompanying drawings in which: — lo Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the guard as applied to a bottle, Fig*. 2 showing the position into which the guard is turned to allow of the cork or stopper being removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the guard and Fig. 4 is a plan of the said guard. 20 This improved guard for use in connection with poison bottles and the like consists of a suitably curved plate a, the lower end of which is weighted as at h for the purpose of normally retaining the guard in the position shown (Fig. 1). The upper end a1 of the plate a is bent over as shown, so as to cover the cork or stopper of the bottle when in the normal position, and is furnished with an 2d extension h1 upon each side. A forward extension of the plate a1 is bent back so as to form a loop c to allow of tlhe guard being readily connected to the bottle during transit. The curved plate a is provided with a longitudinal tapering slot s, to allow of the guard being slipped over the neck of the bottle, while a projecting spring tongue <7 is also formed out of ilhe substance of the plate a, the object of 30 which is to prevent the ready removal of the device, by coming against the ring or flange r of the neck of the bottle. In the normal position as shown in Fig. 1 the top plate, a1 and the side extensions bl cover the cork or stopper, while when it is required to remove the latter, it is onlv necessary to turn the guard into the position shown at Fig. 2, when 3d the. cork or stopper can be readily removed, while as soon as the guard is released the weighted extremity b automatically restores it to the position shown at Fig. 1 so as to cover the cork or stopper of the botitle. The extremity b mav be weighted in any convenient and suitable manner, but preferably by bending the end of the plate a around a bar or core of suitable heavy 40 material, such for instance as lead.
