About this work

Description

Papers relating to 'A Psycho-analytical Study of Sculpture', paper by Ismond Rosen, for delivery at the Foyer Culturel International, Cerisy-La-Salle (Manche), Apr-Sep 1962, Troisieme Decade 1-11 September: 'L'art et la psychanalyse' (Art and Psychoanalysis).
File includes Rosen's correspondence with Dr Anne Clancier (one of the organisers of the September programme), festival programme, programme of Art and Psychoanalysis, 1-11 Sep, abstract summary of Rosen's paper, typescripts of the completed paper in English and in French, earlier typescript/manuscript drafts of the paper, bibliographies, manuscript notes on Piaget's The Child's Concept of Space (1956), two pages of Rosen's portrait doodles of people at the conference in Cerisy 1962.

The paper seems to have originally been entitled: 'On 'Secration' - The Making of Holy Images. A Psycho-analytical study of sculpture'. It deals with 'certain intrapsychic processes involved in the creation of three dimensional plastic images, with special reference to repetition-compulsion, artistic working through and the autonomous functions of the ego as regards early body ego and kinaesthetic experiences in relation to the mother' (quote from abstract). The papers also refer to Piaget (re The Child's Concept of Space) and Freud's work on id-ego differentiations.

(Original file was labelled 'Psychoanalysis and sculpture').
