Description

File consists of general correspondence relating to the British Pharmacological Society (B.P.S.). The file includes many handwritten notes from Professor J.F. Mitchell (succeeded Vane as General Secretary of the B.P.S.) and sent to Vane which cover gossip about friends, acquaintances and general issues in addition to B.P.S. matters. Details include:

Copy of typed minutes of the B.P.S. meetings in Glasgow and Berlin which had taken place on 12/13 July 1973 and 12-14 September 1973 respectively. The minutes are dated 3 January 1974 and refer to Vane stepping down as General Secretary of the B.PS. There is also a covering note from Vane to Jimmy Mitchell (his successor as General Secretary), dated 4 January 1974.

Letter from J. Mitchell to Vane, regarding his taking over of the position of General Secretary, outstanding issues and updating Vane on the last B.P.S. meeting and social news (dated 7 January 1974).

Letter from W.D.M. Patton (University Department of Pharmacology, Oxford) with an enclosure which was sent to the B.P.S. Finance Committee and copied to Vane. The enclosed document is a draft agreement between the B.P.S. and Macmillan publishers regarding the publication of the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. Paton's letter is dated 28 January 1974 and the cover letter to the draft agreement is dated 18 January 1974. Vane sent a thank you note to Paton 1 February 1974.

Correspondence between A.S.V. Burgen (Chairman of the British National Committee for Pharmacology and Foreign Secretary of the Royal Society) and Vane with Burgen asking Vane to speak at a forthcoming meeting of the British National Committee for Pharmacology about E.E.C. regulations and to circulate a paper beforehand (three letters dated, 21 November 1973, 23 November 1973 and 26 November 1973). The paper produced for the meeting titled, "EEC Directives on the Employment of Pharmacists in Supervisory Posts in the Pharmaceutical Industry" is included as are the minutes of the first meeting of the British National Committee for Pharmacology which took place 11 December 1973. There is also a letter from Vane to Dr E.W. Gill, who had written the paper on behalf of Vane (12 December 1973), discussing the outcome of the meeting and a letter from the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, who disagreed with the contents of the paper, suggesting a joint consultation with the B.P.S. (25 January 1974). Vane takes up the issue again, as a result of an article published by the Pharmaceutical Society, in a letter to Mitchell dated 27 June 1975. Mitchell's response, dated 2 July 1975 is included.

Correspondence between Vane, Mitchell, Dr Elsworth P. Cook (Executive Officer for Pharmacological Reviews) and Dr Marion deV. Cotten the editor, regarding concerns over the editorial processes for the US publication, Pharmacological Reviews. There are seven letters in total from 12 November 1973 to 28 January 1974.

Correspondence between Vane, Mitchell and David Burn of Macmillan Journals regarding the 1974 B.P.S. Handbook. There are three letters dated from 28 January to 31 January 1974. There is related correspondence with Vane asking for copies of the published handbook (28 February to 5 March 1974). There is also further correspondence about the 1975 Handbook (18 and 28 February 1975 and 10 March 1975).

Letter from Mitchell to R.P. Stephenson, copied to Vane, regarding the implications of having published a new society journal and the financial problems that this was now causing (22 November 1974). There is also a related letter from Mitchell to Professor Turner (Department of Clinical Pharmacology at St Bartholomews, London) regarding financial issues facing the B.P.S. particularly in relation to the journal (13 January 1975).

Correspondence between Vane, Mitchell and Professor G.P. Lewis about the funding of future B.P.S. meetings and the potential for pharmaceutical companies to contribute (letters of 20 November, 26 November and 2 December 1974). Further correspondence on this issue between Vane and Dr John Walker arises in 1975 (three letters dated 15 January, 3 February and 7 February 1975).

Correspondence regarding a missing manuscript, MS 284 (1973), T.S. Miles & P.G. Dellow titled "Meiosis: a Prostglandin Response that is Not Inhibited by Aspirin". Five letters between the authors from the University of Adelaide, the editor of the British Journal of Pharmacology (Dr H.M. Adam) and Vane (dated 20 June 1975 to 30 June 1975).

Correspondence between Mitchell and Vane discussing; Vane's desire to step down from the National Committee for Physiological Sciences; the composition of the committee of the B.P.S.; the poor quality of papers presented at the B.P.S. meetings; and the agenda for the B.P.S. meeting to be held 4 November 1975 at the Royal College of Surgeons (4 letters from 15 September 1975 to 29 September 1975).

Copy of a paper to be presented to the B.P.S. meeting 17-19 December 1975 at the Royal College of Surgeons, Dorothea J. Baker, D.G. Trist and M. Wetherall, "Inhibition of Phagocytosis by Mepacrine". All three authors were from Vane's employer, Wellcome Research Laboratories, Beckenham, Kent.

Correspondence regarding Macmillan including; copy of the B.P.S. contract with Macmillan from 1967 regarding the publication of the British Journal of Pharmacology, with covering letter from Mitchell dated 25 September 1975; letter from Donald Straughan (School of Pharmacy, University of London) regarding improved terms with Macmillan, dated 8 September 1975; and letter from Vane to Mitchell, 24 September 1975, about the journal Prostaglandins.

Cuthbert to Vane, 14 October 1976, discussing publishers, Vane's difficulties with manuscript 556 and his regret at Vane's decision to publish some of his newer work elsewhere as a result of issues with speed of publication. There is also a related letter from Cuthbert to Vane (18 October 1976) enclosing the annual report of the British Journal of Pharmacology and setting out why the journal was not in a position to publish a paper in under 90 days. Vane's response to Adam (22 October 1976) is included.

Letter from Dr Main, School of Pharmacology, London, 7 April 1975, requesting that Vane review an enclosed paper, MS 100, "Changes Induced by Angiotensins and Prostaglandins E2 on the Release of Transmitters from Isolated Perfused Rabbit Kidney During Periarterial Stimulation". The paper is not enclosed but Vane's review of this paper by Z. Sevim Ercan, rejecting publication, is present.

Correspondence between Vane and Mitchell concerning Vane's article about Dr A.L. Willis, which is included (8 and 11 November 1976).

Letter from Graham Lewis to Vane, 11 February 1977, regarding a B.P.S. and Research Defence Society response to The Home Office revised format of the Annual Return of Experiments under the Cruelty to Animals Act 1876.
