Biographical note

The first president was Mr W. P Robinson (1942-1945), followed by the surgeon Brigadier W. Rowley Bristow (1945-1947). He was succeeded by St. John D. Buxton (1947-1952) who temporarily resumed the role in late 1952 after his successor, Major General Philip H. Mitchiner, died unexpectedly. Brigadier Hugh Llewellyn Glyn Hughes, Medical Director of the North West Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board, took up the position in early 1953. He held the role until 1973 when he was succeeded by Peter S. London..

Eric Claxton originally held the position of Chairman. After he stepped down in 1969, the Council agreed to create the official position of "Founder" for him. He was succeeded by Helen Nicholson (1970-1972) and then Miss E. M. Dudman.

In the early 1960s the Chair of the General Management Committee was Nancy Budgett. In the second half of the 1960s the position was held by H. S. Taylor-Young, who was succeeded by Colin Dawson in 1970. He held the position until 1983 and was succeeded by Pat Stokoe.
