About this work

Description

On changing the Queen's Roll to card format, details of all nurses then working were transcribed, so the first card is for a nurse who was entered on the Roll in 1907, and thereafter there are gaps where nurses had retired or died, until 1937 when all nurses newly qualified for the Roll were entered straight onto card. The card was redesigned in 1962, and then replaced by files of applications and reports (J.6/1-12), as the Institute attempted to present a modern image to attempt to avoid the imposition of a national training scheme.

There is a gap in the sequence, between numbers 13599 and 14057, where the original records went missing during the Institute's move to their present headquarters. The card for Queen's Nurse 19273 escaped being microfilmed, and was found among other records during listing. It is now in file J.7/1.

A cumulative index to the Queen's Nurses in these cards and in the rolls (J.3) is ref J.1.
