Biographical note
Queen Victoria died in 1901, and the Women's Memorial was inaugurated to supplement the endowment to the Institute. The sum of £66,600 was collected `in the various counties of England and Wales, the Colonies and abroad'. Separate collections were made in Scotland and Ireland, bringing the total to £84,000.
