Description

Sub-series consists of papers, correspondence, photographs and cassette tapes related to the seminar on "Endogenous Opiates", which was held at the Wellcome Institute on 7 November 1995. The seminar was part of the Wellcome Witnesses to Twentieth Century Medicine meetings also known as the Witness Seminars. The transcript of this seminar was published with three other seminars in Volume 1 of the Witness Seminar series, E.M. Tansey, P.P. Catterall, D.A. Christie, S.V. Willhoft, L.A. Reynolds (editors), Technology Transfer in Britain: The Case of Monoclonal Antibodies; Self and Non-self: A History of Autoimmunity; Endogenous Opiates; The Committee on Safety of Drugs, (London: Wellcome Trust, 1997).

The participants were; Dr Virginia Berridge (London); Dr Angela Coutts (Aberdeen); Dr Irene Green (Sussex); Professor John Hughes (Parke-Davis Neuroscience Research Centre, Cambridge) who was a witness; Professor Leslie Iversen (Oxford); Dr Stephen Lock (London); Professor Howard Morris (Imperial College of Science & Technology, London) who was a witness; Professor Lesley Rees (Dean, St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical School, London) who was the Chair; Dr Derek Smyth (Salzburg); Professor Hannah Steinberg (London); Dr Tilli Tansey (London) who was the historian, seminar organiser and joint editor of the published transcript; Dr David Tyrrell (Salisbury); and Professor Miles Weatherall (Charlbury).
