CLINICAL RESEARCH

TL is remembered as the founder in England of clinical science as a recognised discipline in medicine. In 1916 he was appointed as the first Director of the MRC Department of Clinical Science at UCH, which was recognised by the UCH Medical Committee in June 1930. In 1932 the Rockefeller Foundation endowed the Directorship, with the Department's remaining costs met by UCH and the MRC. The Department embodied TL's views on clinical science, and thus ideas and practice are closely allied in his correspondence and memoranda concerning its foundation and administration. Other material illustrates TL's wider views on medical education, its relationship with research and the place of clinical science in both. D.1 These files of copied correspondence and memoranda were compiled by TL, with a brief introduction to each file, and give an overview of his relationship with the MRC and UCHMS administration.
