    PREFACE. j *j' » . .. i - • - ...**• «-»•'* THE frequency and fatality of the difeafe treated of in the follow- ing flieets, are fo well known, and have been fo often lamented, that every well-meant endeavour to improve the method of treating it, cannot fail to meet with a candid reception from the public. The Author does not profefs to give a fyftematic treatife on the fubjeft, but has confined himfelf to a few general obfervations on the remedies that have hitherto been the molt commonly em- ployed ; together with fuch other re- marks as have occurred to him in the courfe of his practice. If
