Improvements in Machinery for the Manufacture of Tablets for Medicinal and other Purposes. I, James Francis Buckley, of 27 Highfield Road, Hartford, in tlie County of Kent, Pharmaceutical Engineer, do hereby declare the nature of this inven¬ tion to be as follows : — , The present invention has reference to that class of machine for making 0 tablets which comprises a rotating table carrying a number of dies or moulds and corresponding plungers or punches advancing into the same at a certain point in the rotation of the table to compress the material for the tablets previously introduced. In carrying out this invention a rotating mould table with punches and lb' rollers for driving the punches into the moulds at predetermined points, are employed, but the invention is directed to the construction and arrangement of the parts in such a manner that the machine will be capable of a high rate of speed and will turn out a much greater number of tablets in a given time than has hitherto been attained. 16 In constructing a tablet machine embodying my improvements the rotating mould table is channelled circumferentially to form a cavity for the dies and the die holes together with the guides for the punches are drilled through the table from top to bottom in perfect vertical alignment. The rotating mould table is mounted on a vertical spindle provided with ball 20 bearings in a suitable framing and furnished with gearing, preferably spiral gearing, for driving it at a smooth and even speed from any convenient source of power. The dies which are arranged in a circle in the circumferential cavity in the table as before mentioned have advancing and retiring bottoms consisting of 25 vertically sliding punches. These jmnches are made adjustable longitudinally not only to compensate for wear but to regulate the quantity of the material to be contained in each tablet and the degree of compression to be imparted. A slight difference between the lengths of the punches means a difference in the density and weight of the 30 tablets, which is not desirable. Overhanging the dies and arranged to work in an exact line therewith are the upper punches which co-operate with the lower punches to compress the material in the dies. These punches, like those below, are adjustable longitudinally for the same reasons. 35 The upper punches are mounted in vertical guides situated in the overhanging portion of the rotating table as before explained and they are caused to descend into the dies only when the compressing stroke is to be made.
