About this work

Description

Collection of alchemical works, including the 'Sapientia Veterum': in Latin and Italian. The first work is illustrated by 42 symbolical figures (flasks), of which all are in water-colour except the last two. This collection seems to have been compiled and written out by a French alchemist. A note at the head of the title to No. 1 states: 'Voyez le titre comme il estoit à l'original du Livre sur lequel celuy-cy a esté pris et copié.' This last statement must refer to the two last uncoloured figures at the end of this work. Above the first is written: 'Grandeur des vaisseaux d'un autre exemplaire', and above the second: 'Vray grandeur du Vaisseau du present Manuscrit cy devant depeint dans le quel la hauteur avoit esté designée seulement à peu prés: mais du depuis elle a esté figurée icy exactement.' Such exactitude is very unusual in alchemical MSS.
