HC Hunt, in A Retired Habitation (1932), page 117, says that: “One successful form of intellectual amusement, ‘The Lodge Shakespearians’, was a periodical gathering founded and directed by a young Cambridge student who occasionally came to The Retreat to tide over a period of instability. Plays were read and a light supper was shared by the readers. At first the circle was comparatively small, and consisted of men only, but later on much larger meetings were held. After the departure of its founder, the society was carried on for several years under the leadership of Dr Mackenzie.” Evidently plays other than Shakespeare were also read: the photograph shows the readers, left to right, adopting characters from Sheridan’s ‘School for Scandal’: Sir Oliver Surface, Charles Surface, Moses, Joseph, and auctioneer. The characters have long clay pipes and other adornments.
