Biographical note

At a meeting of the JSG in September 1972, the Definition of the Midwife, published in WHO Technical Report Series No. 331, was discussed and members felt the existing definition was outdated and needed revising.

The ICM and FIGO circulated this new Definition to all Governments, International bodies and Obstetric, Midwifery, Nursing and Medical associations, to encourage its adoption and application to midwifery practice.
