Acquisition note

Purchased from: Desgranges, Paris, February 1931; Stevens, London, March 1931; Sotheby's, London, November 1931 and December 1931; and Glendining, London, February 1932 and January 1935. nos. 2, 5-6 and 8 transferred from Wellcome Historical Medical Museum, c.1939; no. 2 also carries the accession number 16488, which indicates that it would have been acquired around late 1906, although the precise provenance is not recorded.

Biographical note

Nathaniel Wallich qualified M.D. in Copenhagen and became a surgeon in the Danish settlement at Serampore, India, in 1807. When this settlement was taken over by the East India Company in 1813 Wallich transferred to English service and became the long-serving superintendant of the Calcutta Botanic Gardens, retiring to England in 1847.

His son George Charles Wallich qualified M.D. in Edinburgh in 1834 and served in the Indian Medical Service.
