About this work

Description

Tractat segon de las Nafras. Tracta[t] universal de Ulseras. Tractat de Anathomia. Notes of a general course of lectures on surgery written by Joseph Socias, of which the second and third parts are contained in this MS. A reference to a first part on 'tumors preternaturals' is made at the beginning of the first work. Ff. 1-65, De las nafras; 66-109, De ulseras; 111-126, Anathomia. The earliest date is 1760 on fol. 95v at which time Socias describes himself 'en lo Hospital de Tarragona ... practican del mateix hospital.' The lectures must therefore have been written before he qualified. On fol. 129 is a note of his marriage in 1768. It is possible that these lectures were all given by a certain Juan Matos Artos, whose name has not been found in the bibliographies. He was certainly the author of the 'Anathomia' section of this MS, as is shown by the note at the end of that treatise which states: 'El tratado 2° su sangre de Don Juan Matos Artos'. Pasted inside the upper cover is a broadside 'Oratio deprecatoria contra pedras y centellas', in Catalan and Latin: the text within a woodcut border, and above it a woodcut of Saint Barbara, probably printed c. 1750. Produced in Tarragona.
