Acquisition note

The archives catalogued here were given to the Contemporary Medical Archives Centre by the Honorary President and archivist-historian of the Organisation, Professor Francisco Vilardell MD FRCP and received as two accessions in December 1995 and July 1997. Some additional audio-visual material relating to the 1958 International Congress was received in May 2000, and further minutes of meetings and copies of the journal in Sep 2000.

Biographical note

The origin of this organisation was at the First International Congress of Gasteroenterology in Brussels, August 1935, at which the International Society of Gastroenterology was founded. However, only the Proceedings of this Congress survive, prior to the reconstitution of the Society as the Organisation Mondiale de Gastroentérologie/World Organisation of Gastroenterology at a joint meeting in Washington DC with various related American Societies in 1958. There are some gaps in the record since 1958.
