Inspection of District.—Tliis District lias been regularly inspected during the jiast year. Mr. Francis Lancaster, the Inspector of Nuisances, resigned Ids post in Hepteniber last, and IMr. T. Biki'r rvas appointed to the office on October 1st. iSanitarp Condition and Progress:—Water Sapjdj/.—The town is supiilied witli water by means of a pumping scheme from I)iy Hill Laithe, laid down in 1.S9:}, and this lias yielded an abundant supply. This year shortness of supply was threatened in June, but it was found to be due to extensive leakage in the main in Manchestor-road, and this was remedied. A Deacon’s waste water meter was jnirchased by the Council in July, with a view to detecting any leakage in the future. A number of tire hydrants have this year been placed on the mains; aaid 20 new houses have been connected with the supply. The average daily consumption of water has lieen gallons per head. Seiceratje and Drainage.—(kuitracts for the work were let at the close of last year, in eonnection with the scheme for sewerage prepared by Messrs. Brierley & Holt, engineers, of Blackburn, and the main sewering of the town was ]iractically completed at the end of the year. At the outfall works, the main effiuent outfall and the tinishing of the filter beds, and preparation of the subsequent filtration areas have yet to be done, before the work of private connections with house property can be commenced. Each manhole and lamphole acts as a ventilator.
