About this work
Description
Mrs Heberden owned a tea chest which contained a Latin inscription. These documents transcribe, discuss and translate the inscription, which relates to the making of the chest from a Greek olive tree, its contents of Indian tea and its transport to London. W. Jones translated it into Ancient Greek and provided an analysis of the content, language and meaning. Jacob Bryant then wrote a poem in the style of Tibullus as if from the tea chest's point of view of its new life in London. T. Tyrwhitt translated the inscription into English, which he sent to Heberden.
