Biographical note
Prior to the national launch of the 'Health Care in the High Street' campaign in 1985 there was a period of 5 years of activity and discussion between the FPA and the PSGB, commencing in 1980 on the subject of greater involvement of the pharmacist in the area of family planning. In 1981 there was an initial questionnaire survey of 660 pharmacists which revealed strong support for the suggested idea of widening the traditional remit of pharmacists to include provision of information on contraception.
On this basis, during 1982, the FPA endeavoured to assess the viability of a pharmacy based contraceptive information service by means of a trial in which over 700 pharmacists were provided with materials: a medical handbook, shop window stickers and a specially designed stand carrying 6 different FPA leaflets to be employed over a 3 month period.
