About this work

Description

Patients were classified according to the Rai staging system in order to provide a prognosis of the disease. According to the stage of the disease, patients received different types of treatment; patients with Rai stage I to IV received randomised treatments. Results were observed to note the effectiveness of various methods of therapy, including the impact of treatment on survival rates, and whether survival of stable, early CLL could be prolonged by treatment.

600 patients participated in the first CLL trial, which began in 1979 and concluded six years later in 1984.
