Biographical note

The Institute was a centre of excellence for district nursing, receiving requests from many countries for advice on setting up a service, on training personnel and on professional techniques and equipment. Information given includes detailed reviews of the place of district nursing in Britain's health service. There were very strong links with some former colonies and dominions: Queen's nurses set up the service in Malta in 1947, which affiliated to the Institute in 1952; and the Institute advised on and closely monitored the establishment of services in Jamaica, Tanganyika and Trinidad and Tobago. The records of relations with these countries include reports of the Superintendent's visits
