Description

Dr. G. R Wyatt's correspondence regarding the identification of a component found in certain nucleic acids, Cx, as 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (HMC). This file holds letters sent to and from Dr J. M. Sprague, Dr. J Spizizen, Dr. B Hampil and Dr. C. S. Miller concerning the transfer and analysis of both nucleic acids isolated from viruses and of synthetically obtained HMC. Of particular note is a letter dated January 31st 1953 in which G. R.Wyatt wrote to Dr. Hampil. This letter contains results of a quantitative analysis of vaccinia nucleic acids which shows the molar quantities of adenine and thymine, and also guanine and cytosine to be near equal and thus these results are "in accordance with what seems to be a quite general (and quite unexplained!) rule in DNA's."
