About this work

Description

Mainly printed, published and official sources relating to various public health topics. The provenance of this collection is not known, though it is likely that they were accumulated either by the editor of Public Health or the Society Executive Secretary. The alphabetical subject arrangement in M Pelling's 'Handlist of Records of the Society of Medical Officers of Health', 1980, has been maintained.

In the series list subject titles are followed by a summary of the topics covered and a description of items of particular note. A large amount of illustrative material is contained in this section.

Types of material included:

Government committee, research, departmental and special reports

Government bills, regulations, statutory rules and orders and circulars to local authorities

Extracts from Hansard Parliamentary Debates

Reports, memoranda, pamphlets, books, handbooks, brochures, publicity leaflets and research papers of organisations representing medicine and various aspects of public health, including the Society

Evidence to government committees submitted by the Society and various other organisations

Journal articles, including off-prints, particularly from Public Health, British Medical Journal, The Medical Officer, and The Lancet, and newspaper cuttings

Unpublished material such as letters from the Ministry of Health and public health organisations, reports and survey results

A box entitled 'League of Nations Bulletins and Publications, 1920-1945' was included in M Pelling's Handlist of Records of the Society of Medical Officers of Health, 1980, but is now missing.
