Biographical note

Project Summary:Taking place at Arnolfini, Bristol, 5Hz is a trans-disciplinary project comprising a series of public events, interactive installation, performance work and exhibition from artist Emma Smith in collaboration with Cognitive Neuroscientist Nina Kazanina, Psycholinguist and Phonetician Laurence White, and Musicologist Emma Hornby from the University of Bristol. With the participation of the public, Smith aims to create a brand new language '5Hz' as a tool for social bonding, based on neurological r esponses to the rhythmic properties of voice. Following an innovative three-day event in January 2013, Arnolfini invited Smith to return and propose a new project. The proposal is 5Hz; an artwork that takes as starting point the likelihood that the voice evolved for the purpose of song rather than speech, asking how language might have evolved if we prioritised wellbeing and connection over the communication of information. The project will begin in November 2013 with six public facing l ive laboratories where the team will sample a wealth of public and expert contributions before Smith develops the final installation, vocal performance and exhibition in November 2014. Participation is at the heart of the 5Hz proposal. Laboratories will feature live EEG brain recording and physiological monitoring of participants listening to vocal samples, language development simulation workshops, and interactive presentations on the use of voice for social bonding. The public will thus con tribute to the development of the artwork while actively engaging in the science inspiring it. 5Hz reflects Smiths unique investigatory practice and deep commitment to public engagement in the arts.
