About this work
Description
This committee was established in 1982 to inquire and study into IVF and embryology, as the first IVF baby: Louise Brown was born in 1978, and there was concern over the speed of how these treatments were developing. The committee got its name from Mary Warnock (later Baroness Warnock) who chaired it.
The results were published in The Warnock Report in 1984 and stated that human embryos should be protected by research and IVF should be permissible but with appropriate safe guards. They also proposed establishing a regulatory body. This report eventually led to the passing of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act in 1990 (see SA/NAC/B/7/7).
The files include: a copy of the Report, reports from journals about the committee and some correspondence.
