Biographical note

Awarded to Pontecorvo in appreciation of his fundamental work in mircrobial genetics. The prize was named after the Danish Professor Dr Emil Christian Hansen (1842-1909) who was a microbiologist and director of the Physiological Department of the Carlesberg Foundation in Copenhagen. He was famous for introducing "the pure culture technique in the brewing industry".
