About this work

Description

Correspondence and papers relating to Burkitt's communication with the flour milling industry about the effects of refining flour and the defensive responses from the industry. Comprises a press statement by The Flour Advisory Bureau issued in May 1972 refuting claims that there is a connection between products such as white bread and the incidence of diverticular disease in developed countries (the statement ends with a quote by Professor McCance "Discussions on the relative merits of white and wholemeal bread are usually directed more by psychological bias than by experimental facts"), and copy of a response signed by Burkitt, Painter and Trowell; letter submitted to the BMJ for publication from the Flour Milling and Baking Research Association entitled 'A critique of the Cleave-Painter-Burkitt hypothesis concering the effects of dietary fibre', discussing 'factual inaccuracies' in the theory, with a copy of Burkitt's response, Jul-Sep 1972.
