Biographical note

Prior to the name change and formation of the IEA Council in 1964, the Convening Committee (sometimes called the Planning or Programme Committee) of the International Corresponding Club (ICC) functioned largely as the Executive Committee, whose purpose was to lead the study group and to organise the next International Scientific Meeting (ISM). Initially, contact between correspondents in the British section of the ICC (Preventive and Social Medicine) was through informal meetings and via the Bulletin of the ICC (first produced from January 1955).

The first formal meeting of the ICC was held in London at the Ciba Foundation on 30 June - 1 July, 1956, and the first Convening Committee meeting took place in Amsterdam, the Netherlands on 2 - 3 November, 1956.

At the first ISM and Business Meeting in 1957 at Noordwijk, the Netherlands, the first Executive Committee (EC) of the ICC was elected, and first EC meeting was held in Leiden on 7 September 1957:

Dr. Robert Cruikshank (Edinburgh): Chairman

Dr. Lester Breslow (USA)

Dr. B. Cvjetanovic (Yugoslavia)

Dr. Charles Fletcher (London)

Dr. A. Querido (Amsterdam)

Dr. H. J. Ustvedt (Oslo)

Dr. John M. Weir (New York)

Dr. John Pemberton (Belfast) Co-founder and Joint Honorary Secretary

Dr. Harold Willard (USA) Co-founder and Joint Honorary Secretary

The EC comprised at least the Officers of the Association: Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and Editor of the Bulletin, and was responsible for the affairs of the Association between meetings of Council. The EC met at least once per year, and more than half the Committee membership formed a quorum.

The next Executive Committee, appointed in 1959, followed the re-naming of the organisation to the International Epidemilogical Association (IEA) and formation of the constitution in July 1958, and constituted the following:

Dr. Robert Cruikshank: Chairman

Dr. L. Breslow: Vice-Chairman

Dr. J. Pemberton: Treasurer and Membership Secretary

Dr. H. Willard: Meetings Secretary

Dr. B. Cvjetanovic

Dr. Richard Doll

Dr. C. M. Fletcher

Dr. J. Padeira de Freitas (Brazil)

Dr. K. Raska (Czechoslovakia)

Dr. A. Robertson (USA)

Between 1957 and 1991, there were 72 EC meetings in total.
