About this work
Description
Note to file cover (retained), recto: “Key paper is July 27, 1957” (referring to Yudkin, “Diet and Coronary Thrombosis,” The Lancet, July 27, 1957, 155-62) – see Cleave’s annotated copy of the paper. The file as a whole tracks a shift in Cleave’s disposition towards Yudkin, both publicly (see the chain of letters published in The Lancet from 1964-5 and later) and privately (see correspondence between them). File includes an undated typescript (and copy in Cleave’s hand) of a joint letter from Cleave, G D Campbell and N S Painter regarding “statements about refined carbohydrates made by Professor J Yudkin.” See also, handwritten letter dated “30/3/70.” A note by Cleave (“Beware of disturbing order or you’ll go mad”) found at the front of the file, reflects the assiduousness with which he tracked and ordered his differences with Yudkin.
Note: added to this file, from unsorted papers, a copy of an American magazine The Health Quarterly, 2:3 (1977), containing article by Yudkin, “The Dietary Treatment of Obesity,” 18-19, 69; pages (marked) cut from magazine and inserted inside cover; on the front of the magazine, in Cleave’s hand: “Yudkin Dénoument (outcome)” and “Sent to Painter.” See also, below (C.1/6), letter from Yudkin to Cleave (14 March, 1960) regarding Cleave’s “little book about varicose veins” in which Yudkin concludes “We do not seem to get very far with our discussions.…”
