READ MARCH 5, 1856. 19^7 Within a few years past, great progress has been made in the pathology of the kidney, and it is therefore much to be desired that our knowledge of its anatomy should be as com- plete as possible, since every scientific examination of the diseased organ, or even of its secretion, is based upon our knowledge of the healthy structure, and must ever refer to this as its standard. We owe much to the researches of Malpighi and of Laurentius Bellini, who first discovered the tubular structure of the kidney, but we are greatly indebted to Bow- man, Toynbee, Johnson, Henle, Gerlach, Bidder, Kolliker, and other living authors, for our present knowledge of the subject. I was induced to enter upon a long-extended investigation of the minute structure of the kidney, from the fact that the high- est authorities were then, and are still at variance, with regard to some of the most important points in the anatomy of this organ. Thus the connection of the Halpighian body with the uriniferous tube, so strongly maintained by Bowman, is denied in toto by Huschke, Miiller, and Hyrtl, of Vienna.
