Biographical note

A Massage Corps Committee was set up in 1938 to enlist members for duty at home and overseas in the event of war. By Sep 1939 over 5,000 members had been enrolled. In Dec 1943 it became the Physiotherapy Service Committee. After the war its character began to change as the number of members serving overseas under the War Office dropped, until by May 1955, there were only 42 female chartered physiotherapists working in military hospitals abroad. The Physiotherapy Service Committee disbanded in Jul 1955, its work being taken over by the Salaries Committee.
