About this work

Description

Content of an envelope inscribed "2nd Generation". Documentation of an investigation conducted by Vivien Kerr, the Society's Co-ordinator, into the potentially mutagenic properties of thalidomide. Research followed by three parts, "Media interest", "Newspaper reports", "Correspondence" (topics taken from dividers).

The theory that damage caused by thalidomide can be passed on to offspring had been advanced by W. G. McBride in 1994 (see British Medical Journal, vol.308: 1635-6) and publicised by the Thalidomide Action Group. It was highly controversal.

A copy of the Kerr's investigation can be found among the papers of R. W. Smithells (PP/SML/C/6).
