Letter from Otto Mason of the Smithsonian Institution to Galton regarding thumb marks as a measure against fraud. Encloses a letter from Gilbert Thompson to Mason explaining how he used his thumb prints to prevent promissory notes being altered. Also a letter from Thompson to Galton on the same subject, with examples.
