Biographical note

Margaret Arden was an independent psychoanalyst. Her work is of particular note for its emphasis on holistic thinking, taking the basic Freudian insights into the existence of unconscious processes and opening them up to interaction with work in other disciplines such as evolutionary biology (the work of Rupert Sheldrake), theoretical physics (the work of David Bohm on consciousness/matter interaction) or cybernetics (Gregory Bateson's work on the place of mind in nature). She corresponded and shared ideas with a wide range of figures, some of them already represented in the Wellcome Collection (most notably Charles Rycroft, PP/RYC). A volume of her collected papers was published as Midwifery of the Soul: A Holistic Perspective on Psychoanalysis (New York: Free Association Press, 1998). She also worked work in private psychoanalytic practice and as a training analyst for the British Association of Psychotherapists. Margaret married Bernard Fox in 1954 who had a successful career as a Consultant Histopathologist and Coroner's Pathologist. This material was donated to Wellcome in 2015 following Margaret's death.
